A Unique South African Eid Atmosphere

Durban may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Eid al-Adha travel, especially since South Africa is not a Muslim-majority country, but this coastal city in South Africa surprised us with its deeply rooted Islamic heritage and strong Muslim community. Eid morning in Durban is incredibly special. Families dress in their best attire and head to massive outdoor Eid salah gatherings, often held in stadiums or open fields, giving the celebration a communal and festive feel. It's one of the best places to celebrate Eid al-Adha with kids due to its open, relaxed vibe.

Access to Qurbani and Local Facilities

What truly impressed us in Durban was how easy and organized the qurbani process was. Unlike any country we have visited, households are allowed to have animals and sacrifice in their personal yards as long as they follow guidelines. Over the years, the Muslim community has become adept at doing this with ease - which is a huge blessing. Many local mosques and halal butcheries offered well-managed slaughtering and storage services. Booking qurbani in advance was smooth, and the facilities were family-friendly, even offering tours for children to learn more about the process. There are many farms that are open to the public where you can spend the day with many kid-friendly activities.

Durban is also a foodie haven for Muslim travelers. The city’s Indian and Zulu cultural blend results in incredible halal dishes like bunny chow, tandoori grills, and mutton curries. Flights to Durban do cost more compared to other destinations we have been to because its is not a major hub, and it's location is more remote, but everything after that is cheap so balances out. With its combination of natural beauty, coastal activities, and vibrant Muslim life, Durban earns its place in our top 3.

2. Istanbul, Turkey — A Majestic Ottoman Eid Experience

A Spiritual and Historic Atmosphere

Istanbul during Eid al-Adha is nothing short of epic. With its skyline dominated by minarets and domes, the city comes alive with Eid spirit. You hear takbirs echoing from the mosques, and locals warmly greet each other. The entire city is moving getting to and from family events and qurbani activities, the parks and open spaces are filled with families having picnics, and you can feel the joy in the air. Our family joined the Eid prayers at the stunning and historic Hafia Sofia, where the mix of history and spirituality was unforgettable, and would recommend going to any of the imperial mosques for the best experience with your family.

Finding spots to do your own qurbani is more difficult here as there are a lot of residents in this major city, so you can image the challenges this presents. There are official, licensed facilities on the outskirts of the city where you can witness or participate in the sacrifice but that requires a significant amount of travel. Alternatively, you can contribute to organized efforts through local masjids or charities, many of which let you distribute meat to the needy.

A Culinary Delight for Muslim Families

Turkish cuisine is always a hit with our kids. From pide and iskender kebabs to baklava and Turkish delight, Istanbul offers an unbeatable variety of halal food. Aside from traditional Turkish food you will find food from around the world, especially Uzbeck, Uygur, and of course Arabic cuisines. During Eid, many families go out for brunch or picnic in the parks around Sultanahmet and the many other public parks and open areas in the city, where you can enjoy delicious food with breathtaking mosque views.

While Istanbul is most expensive from our top 3, especially over the last few years with record inflation, we found that with good planning, it’s manageable for families. Public transportation is excellent and sometimes even free on Eid days which is great, and there are plenty mid-range accommodations options. If you choose Istanbul you will have to budget a bit more than the other two destinations, but Eid in Istanbul is a rich cultural experience that leaves a lasting impression on adults and children alike.

A Peaceful, Family-Oriented Atmosphere

Located just outside of Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam is a model city for Muslim families. With a strong Islamic identity and family-centered lifestyle, Eid here feels personal and meaningful.
